"Learning about Colours of a Rainbow" •

As part of the MOE Kindergarten curriculum, a class of K1 children embarked on their Weeks of Wonder project based on a topic they were interested in. The children had a discussion about a few topics they were interested to find out more about. They then had a vote on the topic that they would explore as a class. 

Children feel a greater sense of ownership towards their learning when they are given a choice to decide on what they would like to learn and find out, and their interests and ideas are incorporated into the activities.  they will feel a greater sense of ownership towards their learning.

Stage 1: I Wonder

Based on the chosen topic “Colours”, the children decided on the following investigative question: “How do we form colours of a rainbow?” Some other related questions that the children posed included “How many colours does a rainbow have?” and “What are the colours of a rainbow?”

Children shared the prior knowledge that they had on the topic.

Stage 2: I Find Out

To kick-start the children’s investigation, the teacher planned hands-on activities to give children opportunities to explore the primary and secondary colours. This began with the introduction of the primary colours – Red, Yellow and Blue. Children explored their classroom environment to look for objects that are in primary colours. 


Moving on to secondary colours, children were engaged in various hands-on activities to investigate how secondary colours are formed.

After the hands-on activities, the children continued to find out more about rainbows through books and a take-home activity with their families. 

Books that were contributed by families and borrowed from the library were shared in class. Children picked up the information books to read and look at the pictures of the various colours on a rainbow.

Children were also given a take-home activity to find out more about rainbows with their parents. The children then shared what they learnt about rainbows with their families in class. Some of the children shared the books they read with their parents, some shared weather charts, while others shared pictorial cards such as how the rainbow comes out after a rainy day. Through the rich sharing in class using various resources, the children gained more understanding about the rainbow.

Stage 3: I Know

The children used various ways to document their findings, for example, arranging the position of the coloured ice-cream sticks according to what they learnt about the colours of the rainbow, drawing a rainbow and creating a class collage with scratch art. The various activities provided opportunities for children to talk about the colours of the rainbow and demonstrate their understanding on the topic.

Through the different activities the children were able to find out answers to their initial questions. It was an engaging learning process for the children where they witnessed the mixing of colours and had opportunities to create the different colours of a rainbow themselves. By building on children’s prior knowledge and planning engaging hands-on activities, the teachers facilitated the children’s construction of knowledge as they gained new understanding of the world around them.
