"Discovering our Roots" •

Objectives:
- To inculcate an awareness of history and heritage by discovering the roots of the community they live in
- To foster effective home-school-community partnership
- To nurture a sense of curiosity in children about the community they live in

- Have a class discussion for your children to learn about their family origins, where their grandparents and great grandparents came from, using a graphic organiser.
- Encourage your children to talk about their roots with their parents and share their findings with peers in class.

- Involve children in creating their family trees. This can be done in class or as a family-based activity at home. Encourage your children to use a variety of art techniques during this process!
- This activity will help to understand where their families come from.
Stage 2--Discovering our Neighbourhood and Community
- Bring your children on a neighbourhood walk and discover iconic places. For example, in Whampoa, children visited places like the Whampoa River, Whampoa Dragon Fountain, Whampoa Makan Place, Old Bakery and the St Michael Bus Terminal.
- After the walk, encourage your children to share what they had observed.
- Give your children opportunities to create the models and structures they observed.

- Invite a guest to your class for an interview. For example, our centre invited MP Mr. Heng Chee How and Mr. Chong, the Dragon Fountain sculptor’s son so that the children could have a better understanding about the history of the Whampoa community.
- Let your children take on different roles during the interview sessions such as interviewer, photographer and videographer.
