"Literacy Day" • MOE Kindergarten @ West Spring
Overview
As part of our continuous effort to instil a love for reading in a fun way, MOE Kindergarten @ West Spring held a Literacy Day event for the children. The children and staff came dressed in their favourite storybook characters and brought along a storybook to share. The event focused on three language skills namely listening, speaking and reading.
Through this event, children were given opportunities to:
- Enjoy a puppet show and show understanding by responding with appropriate gestures.
- Share about their thoughts and feelings for their favourite character or part in the story.
- Use sound patterns to form words and identify beginning sounds in a fun way.
- Read with understanding and for enjoyment.
1. Getting the children excited
To get the children excited, the event started off with a mass celebration where the teachers put up a puppetry performance based on the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. The children were then invited to add in actions and recite the story together.

2. Sharing about their favourite storybook
The children were invited to share about their favourite storybook and the storybook character they were dressed up as. Some children shared why they enjoyed the story while others shared about what they have learnt from the story. This activity gave children opportunities to share their thoughts confidently with their friends.

3. Playing language and literacy games
After the Show-and-Tell, the children also played a variety of language and literacy games.
The K1 children had opportunities to sort items according to the letter sounds and move
through a sound maze. The K2 children played charades and formed words using the letters
in the word ‘MOE KINDERGARTEN’. These games allowed the children to extend their
learning in a fun and enjoyable way.

4. Making their own bookmarks
To give the children an additional motivation to read, parent volunteers were also invited to
conduct a bookmark-making session for the children. The parents met the teachers prior to
the event and discussed possible ideas for this activity. Through the meeting, the teachers
provided guidance to ensure that the activity was engaging, meaningful and appropriate for
the children. The parent volunteers were also able to gain a better understanding of how
children learn through the discussion and activity.

5. Reading together
Lastly, the children were engaged in a Mass Reading activity where they chose the books
they would like to read. Some of the books were borrowed from the National Library Board
while others were donated from West Spring Primary School. The children enjoyed reading
the books with their friends.

6. Conclusion
In a nutshell, the “Literacy Day” allowed children to learn and enjoy using language in a
fun way through a rich variety of activities and games. The children also learnt to
cooperate, negotiate and problem solve to complete the activities together.

day, where the children dressed up and had fun! It
was a memorable day indeed!
