Competency 1: Develop self-awareness

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness involves the ability to identify one’s own abilities and personal qualities and a positive self-concept.  It also entails the recognition of one’s belonging to a socio-cultural group as they develop a sense of self-identity. 

The NEL Framework outlines the following knowledge, skills and dispositions as part of Competency 1: Develop self-awareness.

Competency 1: Develop self-awareness
  1. Identify and talk about aspects of personal identity (e.g., name, age, sex, abilities, likes and dislikes)
  2. Develop a positive self-concept (i.e., feel good about their own competence and characteristics)
    1. Develop confidence in carrying out simple tasks
    2. Show a positive view of themselves
    3. Develop resilience and a positive attitude
    4. Develop a sense of autonomy and choice
  3. Recognise that they are part of a socio-cultural group (e.g., their family, preschool centre, community, ethnic group, country) as they develop a sense of self-identity

Why is self-awareness important?

Self-awareness enables children to understand their feelings, thoughts, values and personal goals, empowering them to construct an understanding of themselves and their identity. This helps them grow in confidence and understand themselves in relation to the people around them.

How might children demonstrate self-awareness?

Here are some examples of how children might demonstrate self-awareness through their actions, speech and behaviour:
  • Identifying and expressing their personal interests, preferences, likes, dislikes and abilities
  • Choosing their own materials and initiating activities 
  • Talking to others about their family and the community
